In 2019, a rather humorous yet unfortunate event occurred during my haircare routine, leading to me cutting my hair short. It was previously quite long, and many people asked why I made the change, knowing how much I valued my hair.
Despite the initial shock, I embraced the new look with a positive mindset, reminding myself that hair grows back. I implemented several steps to maintain healthy hair growth, and here is my current haircare routine:
Haircare Tips
- Leave Your Hair Alone – This may sound odd, but it’s crucial. I try to avoid over-manipulating my hair by not combing or changing hairstyles too frequently. Think of it like a rubber band—constant stretching and twisting will eventually cause it to lose its elasticity. The same goes for hair; it needs a break.
- Protective Hairstyles – These are essential because combing my hair can be quite a task. When my hair isn’t in a low-maintenance bun or a loose ponytail, I keep it in cornrows. This method keeps my hair neat and reduces unnecessary manipulation.
- Apply Relaxer Every 4-6 Months – Previously, I did a relaxer touch-up every three months, but after 2019, I extended it to six months. This change has been beneficial. For those who wear wigs often, this should be manageable. If not, four months might be more feasible. My last salon visit for a relaxer was painful, so I’m reverting to doing it myself at home. Here’s how I manage my hair relaxer at home along with some tips on caring for relaxed hair.
- Nutrition – Good nutrition is vital for overall well-being and has a significant positive impact on hair health. While some people use hair vitamins and supplements, I’m cautious with supplements due to potential side effects like acne and skin rashes, especially from biotin. Prioritizing good skin over unnecessary supplements is a choice I stand by.
- Invest In Good Shampoo And Conditioner – Find a brand that suits you and stick with it. You don’t need to spend a fortune to get effective hair care products.
